Virginia Announces Dates for Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday
- Jan 10, 2013 | Gail Cole

To parents and students immersed in mid-winter homework and activities, it may seem early to start planning for the 2013-14 school year. Nonetheless, the Virginia Department of Taxation has released dates for the state's 2013 August sales tax holiday for school supplies and clothing. It will take place the first full weekend of August, or August 2-4, 2013.
During that time, qualifying school supplies that sell for $20 or less (per item) are exempt from Virginia sales tax, as are purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear that sell for $100 or less (per item).
Retailers are at liberty to not charge sales tax on other items as well, however, "they are responsible for paying the tax on those items to the Department of Taxation."
Additional information about the Virginia Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday is available at the Department of Taxation. Specifics will be discussed on this blog in the future.
It's never too early to start thinking about that first day of school outfit.
